The Housekeeper

Widowed young, with no prospects, she signed up as housekeeper for the church.

Three hours in the rectory four days a week, she would dust, polish and sweep, make the bed, cook an evening meal for the fridge.

On the fifth day she would be in the church itself, tidying the sacristy, clearing out old flowers, organizing the candles.

She also acted as counselor and agony aunt to a succession of lonely priests and occasionally made the beast with two backs with the younger ones.

As she got older she worried that it wouldn’t be enough to satisfy St Peter.
