Destiny

“Build farm houses up on that hill. Bury your weapons and explosives. Get rid of your uniforms and insignia. No overt soldiering, saluting, parades etc. Mix with the locals. Act like civilians. Grow crops. Keep chickens. Romance the local women if needs be, but honour the regiment.

“And if we are conquered, you will be behind enemy lines. You will help destroy the invaders. They won’t suspect you.”

“Well, that’s the story that has been passed down to us. And tonight we dig up those weapons and explosives.

“A Subway has opened in the village. We will fulfil our destiny.”

What a way to defeat the enemy-sneaky,lol!

  2. This is a fabulous idea. Would love to see this fleshed out with another hundred or so words.

  3. Are we talking about a Subway, like the restaurant or an underground train?

    • It’s the restaurant. I envisaged the chains/multinationals as invading the local idyll. The sleepers have lost sight of their original remit. Reading the other comments I see I haven’t got it quite right. Britain did have sleepers like this in WW2 just in case, and both the UK and the USA considered them (and maybe implemented it) during the cold war in case the Soviets invaded.

      • Well I thought you were talking about the restaurant but with such a diverse group from all around the world represented in FF I wasn’t sure and didn’t want to presume.
I’m glad its the restaurant cause that is what I thought it was.
        I get it.

Neither a footlong nor six inch will be ceded. So a true story of the Battle of the Bulge then?

  5. Vbholmes says:

Subway, deep cover? Isn’t that a bit obvious ?

  6. Oooo, I hope they have the veggie patty. 🙂 Can’t beat $5 footlongs for taking over the world. I enjoyed that, Patrick.

  7. rgayer55 says:

Those $5 foot-longs are enough to make a person take up arms. Damn the torpedoes, the submarines have come to town.

  8. A subway ,,, Sacrilage… who will serve the steak and kidney pie? the chips and bangers ?

  9. Dear Patrick,

Fast food and franchise. That’s the way to defeat the enemy. Although a McDonalds would have gone farther in clogging their arteries. Well done, sir.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

at least it was not the big Ronald M golden arches. 😛
    i enjoyed the story.

  11. The idea of the secret life/identity is intriguing. Great take, Patrick. I wouldn’t want a Subway in my village either. Now a burger place…that might be different!

  12. Perry Block says:

How ironic. Everything that was buried is dug up because of a Subway. Well, at least they will all get to “EAT FRESH!” I learned some stuff today, thanks!

  13. draliman says:

A chain store opening in the village? They won’t know what’s hit them 🙂

  14. kz says:

intriguing take on the photo. and i read from the comments that it’s based on a real story.. intriguing indeed.

  15. A cardre of sleepers. Wonderful!

  16. Interesting! I’m eager to know more about how they fulfill their destiny. Despite what their chief/commander said, keeping chickens and romancing the local women doesn’t sound that bad 😀

  17. Bryan Ens says:

Great way to get behind enemy lines. When you say Subway…are you talking about the sandwich place? 🙂

  18. Sandra says:

Fascinating take on the photo. Well done.

  19. troy P. says:

    That’s a pretty long-held mission – nice job!

  20. Nan Falkner says:

I suppose these people are in deep cover? Interesting story. Thanks! Nan
