The End of the Beginning

From day one he hadn’t been that comfortable with these new-fangled 3-D printers. This, he thought to himself, could be the beginning of the end. Later on as the machines became more sophisticated and began both redesigning and reproducing themselves using pirated Genesis software created by a renegade Christian fundamentalist evangelist based in Ohio, he started campaigning for the government to ban the technology and have all existing models destroyed.

It was when several machines were elected as public representatives that he knew he had to take matters into his own hands. Unfortunately for him they hit Delete before he could.

One hundred words or so written in response to the visual prompt at Rochelle Wishoff-Fields’ Friday Fictioneers.

Ha! I’m sure things may turn out that way as self-replicating machines become more and more sophisticated. Very imaginative story. Great job!

Well written Patrick. Mankind creating its own demise.

  7. Bryan Ens says:

Who knew that 3D printers could spell our end… well written!

  8. rgayer55 says:

I wonder if the machines that got elected ever take “fact finding” trips to the Bahamas at taxpayer expense? Oops, if they read this I’ll get deleted.

  9. claudia says:

oh heck.. that would be a grim perspective if machines would take over the world… sometimes technology progress can be frightening indeed…and in some areas they have won lots of ground already..

  10. Sandra says:

    Great idea Patrick! Very imaginative.

Great story of technology run riot – reminds me of the Terminator series!
I have a mental image of photocopiers “sitting” around a table voting on various matters. I loved the last line – I guess they won’t brook any dissent.

  12. Oh those reproducing monsters… better hit delete key at once…

    Great take on the prompt!

The machines won’t make it too far in the GOP; they’re not job creators! But they might be a refreshing change in NY political circles–no distracting sex scandals or scandalous selfies 😉

  14. Dear Patrick,

Well that explains a lot, doesn’t it? Hitting the Delete key now. Good job.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

  15. Fantastic interpretation.
